Recovery after a heart transplant, I don't think anyone can prepare you for it. Believe it or not the roughest parts come from the anti-rejection medications you have to take. In my case my body also ended up swelling allot post-surgery, no joke I gained about 70 pounds in just water. I was holding so much fluid I could barely walk because my legs felt like they were filled with concrete.
Back to the medication, between the fluid and medications I was basically forced to stay home for like the first 3 months post op. I had headaches, nausea, major fluctuations in blood pressure, dizziness, just to name a few. But the worst, Gout flare ups. Somehow my medications caused me to have gout flare ups, never had it before. Basically, crystalized uric acid would build up in my ankle and knee joints causing some of the worse pain I've ever felt. My knee joint would swell and harden, and cause a constant stabbing throbbing pain that almost nothing could relieve. One flare up my wife had to take me to the hospital where I stayed 4 days, just because of pain. Not to beat my chest but I can handle a good bit of pain, but this, this pain broke me down. One aspect some don't consider also, is the mental toll these things can take on you. Mentally recovery had me in some dark places, at times it would feel like it's never going to end, maybe it's easier to just stop trying. Thats where my recovery took me, but everyone has a different experience. I plan to go into all subjects of life with my blog but please comment let me know what may be of interest to you.
